Your chair can kill you!

Yes, it is possible to have premature death by chair. Many might be confused with what this information holds but there are many ways of how you put yourself in danger through this usual inanimate object that we find in our house, offices, parks, favorite cafes, and any other places we like to rest our bums on.

According to a study found on the website of the American Academy of Family Physicians (www.aafp.org). Prolonged periods of sitting increases the risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and even death. These facts are compared to individuals who exercise regularly than those who do not or only work out every once in a while. In addition, the fast growing technological advances do not help either with our capability to exert more effort on physical activities. Cable TV, spending too much time on the computer, or commuting can already be categorized as having a sedentary lifestyle that can lead to obesity. However, the problem of having this type of lifestyle can be prevented. Even if it might not seem much, taking one to three minute breaks of standing per 30 minutes of sitting can already burn 0.7 calories in 60 seconds. Mathematically this might seem small but if summed up, it can lead to 50 calories burnt in an hour. Lastly, a person can also combine working out with watching television to distract himself from the thought of exercising. Ideally, it is recommended to have at least 150 minutes of physical activity every week in order to decrease the risk of serious diseases related to inactivity.

For some, the demand of continuous standing especially at work might be impossible. But tiny bits of adjustment such as, walking to the fax machine or standing up to talk to a client personally or on the telephone can already contribute to lesser problems brought about by prolonged sitting. Being creative is extremely important in managing ones health. So take your time and be very conscious about what you do everyday because you will never know that you’re already damaging your body.
